Two weeks ago I bought a hat made of microfiber. Micro means small.
Very small! And then I started thinking about it. What happens if some of
that fiber goes into my lungs? Are these things small enough to enter
where other materials can't? Can they enter my blood system?

Well, here is a Slashdot story: Facing the Dangers of Nanotech

"Technology Review has a Q&A with Andrew Maynard, the science
advisor for the Woodrow Wilson International Center's nanotechnology
project regarding the dangers of nanomaterials and why we have to act
now."

"Individual experiments have indicated that if you develop materials with
a nanostructure, they do behave differently in the body and in the
environment. We know from animal studies that very, very fine particles,
particles with high surface area, lead to a greater inflammatory response
than the same amount of larger particles. We also know that they can
enter the lining of the lungs and get through to the blood and enter other
organs. There is some evidence that nanoparticles can move into the
brain along the olfactory nerve, so this is completely circumventing the
blood-brain barrier."

Top 5 Reasons Breakfast Is a Must for Kids

of the day"? Here's why, in terms of small-fry. Kids who eat breakfast:

1. Do better in school;
2. Have more focus and concentration, more energy, and better eye-hand
coordination;
3. Have fewer behavioral problems;
4. Are more likely to meet their nutritional needs overall;
5. Have an easier time staying at a healthy weight."

Groopman: The Doctor's In, But Is He Listening?

"Most doctors, within the first 18 seconds of seeing a patient, will interrupt him
telling his story and also generate an idea in his mind [of] what's wrong. And
too often, we make what's called an anchoring mistake — we fix on that snap
judgment."

bijeli sljez, crni sljez, trputac i islandski lišaj .

Slashdot: Some Soft Drinks May Damage Your DNA

"The Independent is reporting new findings that indicate a common
additive called sodium benzoate, found in soft drinks such as Fanta
and Pepsi Max among others, has the ability to switch off vital parts
of DNA in a cell's mitochondria. From the article: 'The mitochondria
consumes the oxygen to give you energy and if you damage it — as
happens in a number of diseased states — then the cell starts to
malfunction very seriously.

And there is a whole array of diseases that are now being tied to damage
to this DNA — Parkinson's and quite a lot of neuro-degenerative diseases,
but above all the whole process of aging.' European Union MPs are now
calling for an urgent investigation in the wake of these alarming new
findings."

BBC: 'My lungs are damaged beyond repair'

"Dr Kon said he had several other young patients who smoke cannabis and
have lung diseases normally seen only in older tobacco smokers.

In a 2002 report, the British Lung Foundation estimated that three to four
cannabis cigarettes a day were associated with the same amount of damage
to the lungs as 20 or more tobacco cigarettes a day."

Wired: The Truth About Autism: Scientists Reconsider What They Think They Know

"Like many people with autism, Baggs doesn't like to look you in the eye
and needs help with tasks like preparing a meal and taking a shower. In
conversation she'll occasionally grunt or sigh, but she stopped speaking
altogether in her early twenties. Instead, she types 120 words a minute,
which the DynaVox then translates into a synthesized female voice that
sounds like a deadpan British schoolteacher."

healthassist.net - 14 Habits That Make You Fat

"Eating fast lets you eat too much before you are fully aware of it. It takes
the brain about 15-20 minutes to start signaling feelings of fullness. Scientists
suppose that fast eating is a risk factor for the metabolic syndrome3, a combi-

cnn - How I survived a heart attack at age 43

"When I had my heart attack at 43, all my doctors were really surprised. I
was young, I'm not overweight, and I don't eat a lot of fatty foods.

In fact, I never eat junk food.

However, a closer look at my medical records would have suggested there
was a problem. My total cholesterol was around 400, and my triglycerides,
which are really affected by diet and exercise, were 600 to 700. A healthy
number is 150 or below."

reddit - Christina Applegate: Why I had a double mastectomy

"There are people who have a really, really strong family history of breast
cancer, so that their odds of getting it are quite high. According to one site,
if you have the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, your lifetime odds of getting breast
cancer are about 36% to 85%. At that point, the reasoning becomes, well,
you're probably going to have to get it done eventually, so it becomes not
a question or whether but a question of when."

New research shows vitamin D slashes risk of cancers by 77 percent

"It's also interesting to note, the Flu season falls primarily in the winter mon-
ths, when we're outside less and not getting the same sun exposure as we
do in the spring and summer enjoying outdoor activities. There's new resea-
rch which is showing that the seasonal flu might in fact, be a vitamin D defi-
ciency rather than some elusive, mutating virus hanging on every door han-
dle you touch."

slashdot - Why Doesn't Exercise Lead To Weight Loss?

"The New York Times' Well blog reports that 'for some time, researchers
have been finding that people who exercise don't necessarily lose weight.'
A study published online in September 2009 in The British Journal of Spo-
rts Medicine was the latest to report apparently disappointing slimming
results. In the study, 58 obese people completed 12 weeks of supervised
aerobic training without changing their diets. The group lost an average of
a little more than seven pounds, and many lost barely half that. How can
that be?"

slashdot - Poor Vision? There's an App For That

"Researchers at MIT's Media Lab have developed a smartphone app that
allows users to measure how poor their vision is (myopia, hyperopia, and
astigmatism) and receive a corrective prescription. The user peers thro-
ugh a $2 optical adapter at the screen of a smartphone. The app displays
lighted bars, and prompts the user to adjust the display until the bars line
up.

Repeating this with bars in different locations and orientations allows the
vision distortion to be determined to within about 0.4 diopters using a Ne-
xus One. The iPhone 4, with its higher-resolution display, should be able
to improve that to 0.28 diopters. This could have broad application in the
developing world, where experienced opticians and diagnostic equipment
are hard to come by."
